Technological university is born on New Year’s Day

The merger of three former institutes of technology in Dublin, Tallaght and Blanchardstown created a new technological university in Ireland on 1 January.

The Technological University Dublin will have three campuses, including Grangegorman in north Dublin, the home of the former Dublin Institute of Technology. The government has invested €20 million over the past five years to develop the technological universities, it said. Almost half of this went to TU Dublin.

The establishment of TU Dublin represents “a landmark day for Irish education”, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, minister of state for higher education, said, adding that it marked the beginning of a new era in Irish higher education.
