Government proposes spending boosts for students and ICT, but universities lament lack of fundamental increase

Ireland’s higher education and research institutions will receive €3.7 billion next year, up from €3.3bn in 2021, according to the government’s latest budget announced on 12 October.

The increase includes €200 million over 2021 and 2022 to “strengthen the financial position of universities and provide capacity for extra students”. Another €253.5m has been allocated to Science Foundation Ireland’s challenge-based funding scheme, the Irish Research Council, and “to assist” the Tyndall National Institute in developing Ireland’s ICT expertise.
