Athlone, Limerick granted university status

Irish technology institutes to become single university as Waterford and Carlow also apply to merge

The government has granted technological university status to Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology, with the two set to merge and create a new technological university for Ireland’s mid-west region.

The institutes had applied for the designation last November. The announcement marks one of the final steps before the new university is formally established.
