PhD students express ‘deep concern’ over low stipends

Cost of living crisis and inflation have exacerbated impact of stagnating funding, unions say

PhD students in Ireland are calling for an “urgent increase” to postgraduate research stipends in order to stave off poverty caused by skyrocketing prices.

The call, which was articulated by a PhD student collective, has been backed by the Union of Students in Ireland (USI). The newly formed PhD Collective Action Union (PCAU) started an online petition asking for “fair pay” for PhD researchers, which had gathered around 3,000 signatures at the time this article was published.
