Irish universities to get €60m increase in core funding in 2024

Boost for tertiary education welcomed but falls “well short of government promise”

The Irish government has announced a €60 million rise in core funding for universities next year. The policy forms part of its tertiary education and research package for the 2024 budget.

The package also includes a €3,000 increase in the PhD stipend provided by the competitive funding agencies Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Irish Research Council (IRC), as well as a scheme to help small and medium-sized enterprises with the cost of upskilling and reskilling employees.
