Royal Irish Academy pushes government to increase stipends

Academy highlights cost of living concerns for researchers, including sick pay rights and accommodation

The Royal Irish Academy has criticised Ireland’s government for failing to increase PhD research stipends in line with the amount recommended in a national report. It also highlighted other cost of living issues, including rental costs, sick pay and on-campus family housing.

The National Review of State Supports for PhD Researchers has recommended that the stipend for PhD researchers rise to €25,000 per year. Last month Simon Harris, the minister for higher and further education, announced a €3,000 increase, but this puts the yearly total up to only €22,000.
