Research institutes alarmed over €100m funding gap

Members of Italy’s National Research Council have warned that the government’s “stable” research fund for 2019 will in fact leave large holes in their pockets.

The directors of the more than 100 institutes funded by the National Research Council (CNR) held a press event last week to draw attention to a petition calling for more money to counter what they say is a “short-sighted” decline of their budgets. The directors said the financial situation of Italian research institutes is in dire straits, “more than it ever was since [the CNR’s] foundation by Vito Volterra in 1923”.

The directors also wrote open letters to Sergio Mattarella, the president of Italy, and other political figures. Some have donated blood to draw attention to the sapping of their resources.
