A multidisciplinary group of academics in Italy has published a manifesto aimed at countering the “neo-racism” found in public discourse and political propaganda by right-wing parties.
The manifesto’s goal is to tackle and deconstruct slogans such as “Italians first” by highlighting the fact that public and political debates can be racist without resorting to racially explicit terms. The group also wants “to give a civil testimony regarding the social, scientific and cultural error and the profound inhumanity of every form of racism”, it says on the manifesto website.
“There is a form of racism that does not mention race but brings the same kind of discrimination,” explains Elena Gagliasso, professor of philosophy of science at Sapienza Università di Roma.
