Construction is ramping up at Calabria’s first X-ray facility to make up for Covid-19 delays
The Calabria-based Star X-ray facility, under construction on the toe of Italy’s boot, has seen some slowdown during the coronavirus pandemic—but its managers say it remains on track.
Star, which stands for Southern Europe Thomson Back-Scattering Source for Applied Research, will research the use of high-energy X-rays and complement work done at other synchrotron facilities. Once completed, the light source is expected to support science projects in disciplines ranging from materials sciences, prototyping, cultural heritage, chemistry and biomedicine.
