Research infrastructure and other facilities to be awarded €1.4 billion of EU Covid-19 comeback cash

More than €1.4 billion in EU pandemic recovery funding has been made available to upgrade and expand universities and major scientific infrastructures in Italy—and it has to be spent before 2035.

A decree by the country’s research ministry, adopted early in January after clearance by the Court of Auditors, reserves €550 million of the cash to pay for up to 60 per cent of projects that are already in train and ready to start before the end of June 2023. The rest of the €1.4bn has been earmarked for deadlines at the end of 2023 and in 2024.
