In depth: Research integrity is a hot topic among scientists, but a story unfolding in Italy suggests it is not registering as a concern for politicians, even if they are personally involved.

Health minister Orazio Schillaci is a scientifically prolific medical doctor with an impressive track record, specialising in nuclear medicine. In recent weeks, journalists looking into Schillaci’s scholarly publications have claimed to have found several duplications of images in papers which list the minister as a co-author.
