Universities, funders revise research assessment

Social impact to take precedence over output and citations after signing of position paper

Universities and research funders in the Netherlands have committed to judge scientists on educational and social achievements beyond their research output, starting in 2021.

The commitment is set out in a position paper, ‘Room for everyone’s talent: towards a new balance in the recognition and rewards of academics’. The paper was signed last week by 14 Dutch universities, the public research funders NWO and ZonMw, and various other scientific organisations.
