Talk more to solve startup funding confusion, agencies told

Public organisations at national and regional level are at risk of working at cross-purposes when offering loans to startups, a review by the consultancy firm KplusV has found.

The review concerns a government fund, Vroegefasefinanciering (VFF), created by the Dutch ministry of economic affairs and climate policy in 2014. The fund is intended to address the fact that it remains difficult for academics and startups to find private money to fund proof-of-concept research.

However, Dutch local governments also launched similar initiatives in the wake of the VFF, offering loans to entrepreneurs to test the technical feasibility of their ideas and validate the commercial potential of their innovations.
