Impact push ‘could endanger curiosity-driven research’

A stronger emphasis on regional cooperation could make Dutch universities increasingly dependent on industry-funded research, the European University Association has said.

Strengthening links with industry firmly connects universities to their locale but could also prevent more radical forms of innovation at universities across Europe, according to a study by the EUA.

“Universities have been instrumental in regenerating their regions in the aftermath of the financial crisis, moving beyond transferring technologies towards the co-creation of knowledge and driving strategic development,” the EUA said.
