Dutch funders commit to broader research assessment

The NWO, the Netherlands' biggest public research funder, has teamed up with others to sign the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment.

The other signatories are the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) and the royal Dutch science academy KNAW. The VSNU, an association of Dutch universities, signed the declaration in December 2014.

This means that the biggest players in Dutch academia have pledged themselves to the DORA recommendations on overcoming the deficiencies of journal impact factors—a much-used tool to assess research. About 1,200 organisations around the world have signed the declaration since its publication in 2012.
