Vrije Universiteit investigates academic freedom concerns and suspends activities at human rights centre
A Dutch university’s human rights centre has suspended all its research activities and is returning Chinese funding over concerns around academic freedom, in the latest row over academic links with China.
The university revealed this week that the centre would investigate whether its publications, and statements made by staff, were in line with the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. According to a spokesperson for the university, the centre decided to launch the investigation itself.
