Minister plans to introduce legal duty of care for Dutch universities

Robbert Dijkgraaf announces €4 million initiative to combat harassment and discrimination against students and staff

Dutch universities are to be given a “legal duty of care” to protect staff and students from harm as part of plans put forward by science minister Robbert Dijkgraaf.

In a letter to parliament, Dijkgraaf said he would develop a national programme to improve safety in higher education by combating issues such as harassment, racism and abuses of power. This will involve initiatives such as training programmes and the development of behavioural standards. The programme will be funded with €4 million over at least four years.
