Sweden to deport researcher for ‘wrong’ residence permit

Case highlights country’s growing reputation for tough student immigration rules

A Turkish researcher at Stockholm’s prestigious Karolinska Institute is to be deported from Sweden after the Swedish immigration authority ruled she was using the “wrong” type of permit for part of her PhD study.

Gozde Turkoz studied for her PhD with a residence permit as a visiting scientist at KI’s department of medicine. But Migrationsverket insists doctoral students should have a study residence permit and has told her to return to Turkey.
