Academic freedom hemmed by political pressure, lecturers warn

Nordic governments urged to follow recommendations after reports of declining liberty across region

Nordic unions of teachers and university lecturers have urged governments to alleviate the political pressure on academia, after raising concerns about the issue at an annual meeting.

The group of unions said that the academic freedom of higher education institutions was being affected by political demands. Its members demanded that all Nordic governments follow the recommendations on academic freedom of Unesco and the Bologna Process—a system to align European university laws.
