Financial injection hoped to boost resilience of rural regions close to Russian border

The Finnish government is planning to spend €4 million on developing research infrastructure in eastern Finland, partly due to the closure of Finland’s border with Russia.

Petri Honkonen, the Finnish research minister, said the viability of the region needed to be reinforced, after collaboration with Russia was put on hold due to the country’s invasion of Ukraine. The region is also experiencing many structural difficulties, such as a lack of employment and investment.
