Finnish academics have urged the government to strengthen funding for basic research but not rush through any changes.

In the long term, researchers and university teachers in Finland want significant changes to how their profession and environment are financed. They are asking for more basic research funding and are sceptical of the present focus on results-based funding. Yet a new survey of Finnish academics suggests they are hesitant of any rapid reforms.
