Nordic scientists welcome proposed EU involvement in Arctic

Nordic researchers have welcomed the EU’s bid to become an observer at the Arctic Council, a leading intergovernmental forum on Arctic issues.

In a 26 June communication, Developing a European Union Policy Towards the Arctic Region: Progress since 2008 and next steps, the European Commission says that the EU has an important role to play in the region, given that it is a major importer of Arctic goods and has three Arctic member countries.
