In recent years, Sweden’s government has tried to boost the wider impact of the research it funds. The idea was to put research to use in society—by influencing policy, generating business ideas or informing the public.
But recent studies suggest that the strategy has had a limited effect, and the government is now considering introducing impact as an assessment criterion in its revised funding formula for universities.
