UK funders fear EU data regulations could hinder research

Medical research funders in the UK have claimed that suggested amendments to the proposed European Data Protection Regulation could severely impair, and in some cases prevent, research that uses personal data.

Led by the Wellcome Trust, funders have called for further amendments to ensure the continued use and proportionate regulation of pseudonymised data in medical research.

The proposed regulation is intended as an up-to-date replacement of the EU’s 1995 Data Protection Directive.
