Funds for Spanish research centre vanish

The Spanish government is investigating the disappearance of €7 million that was allocated to pay for the construction of a technological centre in Valencia.

A total of €5m from the European Regional Development Fund and €2m from the national government was awarded in January 2010 to Aidico, a regional public technological institute, to fund the construction of a laboratory in Novelda. However, according to documents leaked to Filtrala, a national platform set by the Associated Whistleblowing Press, the funds disappeared from the institute’s account ten months later.

The documents show that the Spanish ministry for economy and competitiveness requested Aidico to explain where the funds had been spent on two occasions last year, once in May and a second time in December. Aidico, which has since suspended its operations, has only justified the expenditure of €1.5m which was used to build an initial concrete structure.
