Police arrests director of Spanish centre

The director of Aido, a Valencia-based technological centre for optics and imaging, has been arrested after being accused of fraud.

The police arrested Emilio Pérez, director of Aido, on 4 June, after searching the centre, a private non-for-profit institute in the technological park of Paterna, which focuses on industrial optics. Pérez is accused of embezzling €1 million of EU funds granted to the institute in 2013. Pérez was granted bail the following day, and has stepped down temporarily. A further 13 people are being investigated.

According to a statement released by Aido, the police seized account documentation from the period between 2008 and 2014 concerning funding from the European Regional Development Fund, the European Social Fund and the regional government of Valencia.
