Strong support for science ahead of Austrian election

Each of the five political parties with seats in the Austrian parliament has said they will support research and universities after the country’s general election on 15 October.

Both parties in the governing coalition—the left-wing Social Democratic Party of Austria and right-wing Austrian People’s Party—responded to a questionnaire from the alliance of Austrian scientific organisations, as did the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria, the left-wing Green Alternative and the left-wing New Austria and Liberal Forum.

The FWF, Austria’s basic research funder and a member of the alliance, said on 19 September that there was a clear cross-party consensus that research, universities and institutes “must be massively supported and sustained in the coming legislative period”.
