Swiss populists restart immigration fight

The Swiss People’s Party SVP is campaigning to end freedom of movement between Switzerland and the EU, an issue which previously jeopardised the country’s position in Horizon 2020.

The SVP plans to launch its anti-immigration initiative, dubbed Borderline, in December, the French-speaking Swiss public broadcaster RTS has reported. The Borderline initiative aims to prevent the Swiss government from signing any further freedom of movement agreements and to force it to renegotiate its existing agreement with the EU, according to RTS.

Initiatives are the means by which Swiss citizens can force a nationwide referendum on a political issue. Borderline is a joint campaign between the SVP and the Campaign for an Independent and Neutral Switzerland, a political group with close ties to the SVP.
