Organisers of the EuroScience Open Forum 2020 hope the event will turn Trieste into a magnet for central and eastern European academics via a proposed science institute in the bustling port.
The Italian city near the Balkans won the competition to host Esof, Europe’s largest public-facing science conference, partly for promising to involve central and eastern European countries. The as-yet-unnamed institute would help to fulfil this pledge, organisers say.
Physicist Stefano Fantoni, president of the Trieste International Foundation for Progress and Freedom of the Sciences, came up with the idea. He wants a multidisciplinary and non-profit meeting place, similar to the Santa Fe Institute in the United States.
