Annika Saarikko, a former family affairs minister, has been appointed Finland’s next research and culture minister, while academic unions have responded to the incoming government’s plans.

Finland’s government was sworn in on 6 June, following parliamentary elections in April.

Saarikko, a member of the Centre Party, became minister of family affairs and social services in 2017. She represents the constituency of Southwest Finland and holds a masters degree in media studies from the University of Turku.
