Spain boosting transparency of animal research, study finds

All 140 of the Spanish biomedical institutions that signed a 2016 transparency agreement on their use of animals in research now have public policies on the issue, a study has found.

The study by the European Animal Research Association (Eara) advocacy organisation, which was published on 17 September, concluded that “The Spanish biomedical sector has made greater strides towards openness about the use of animals in scientific research in the last year than ever before.”

Of the 104 institutional signatories that responded to a survey, 96 per cent said that they think the agreement represents “an important step” for the country’s biomedical research and 86 per cent said it will lead to more openness in their own institution.
