National programme—worth €18.4m—will focus on replacement, reduction and refinement of animal research
The Swiss government has announced the creation of a five-year research programme designed to reduce the use of animals in research and minimise suffering when no alternative is available, with a budget of 20 million Swiss francs (€18.4m).
The programme will be run by the Swiss National Science Foundation, which already requires the researchers it funds to follow the ‘3R’ principles to replace, reduce and refine the use of animals in research.
