‘Ball in Hungary’s court’ over university funding ban, says EU

Spokesperson says European Commission has been “extremely clear” on measures needed to lift ban

The Hungarian government, rather than the EU, needs to move for the bloc to restore funding it is withholding from universities in the country, the European Commission has stressed.

In December last year, EU member states decided to withhold funds from 21 Hungarian universities operated as ‘public interest trusts’, whose governing bodies contain members linked to Hungary’s right-wing prime minister Viktor Orbán and his political party Fidesz.
