Technical workplace internships offered to prospective students

Denmark is trialling a system in which students can gain work experience in technical subjects before starting university, to reduce drop-out rates in such degrees.

The scheme, announced on 11 September, was set up after data from 2016 revealed that 20 per cent of students on technical courses do not complete the course. In some programmes drop-out rates reached more than 30 per cent, the government said, with rates particularly high for students whose academic qualifications were not top-notch. 

However, students who brought previous work experience and skills to their degree were less likely to drop out, the government found.
