Strategic council suggests themes

Finland’s council for strategic research wants to spend more money on innovative technologies, climate change research and gender studies.

The council presented a set of spending themes at an event held in Helsinki on 27 November. The suggested themes are: breakthrough technologies and changing institutions; sustainable and climate-neutral society; and the promotion of equality. The government will have the final say on which themes will be chosen for funding.

Finland’s government established the council for strategic research on 1 July. The council’s purpose is to direct funding towards research that helps solve societal challenges under the umbrella of the research funding agency Academy of Finland. It will be in charge of a budget of €57 million per year, the government said.
