Surge in PhD awards

The number of doctoral degrees awarded in Finland in 2014 increased by 8 per cent compared with the previous year, the statistics agency Tilastokeskus has said.

In a statement on 6 May, Tilastokeskus said that there were almost 164,000 students enrolled in universities in 2014. This is a 2 per cent decrease from the year before.

However, a total of 31,000 degrees were completed that year, a 3 per cent increase from the year before—which included an 8 per cent rise in the number of PhD graduates.
