Aalto rector named

Ilkka Niemelä, provost of Aalto University in Helsinki, has been promoted to rector of the institution.

On 1 July, he will take over from Tuula Teeri, who will leave for Sweden to become the next chief executive of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

Niemelä has been provost since 2014, and in 2000 became professor of computer sciences at the Helsinki University of Technology—which merged with two other institutions in 2010 to become Aalto University. He was head of the Laboratory for Theoretical Computer Science between 2000 and 2007.
