Academy to fund 12 excellence centres

The Academy of Finland will pay for 12 centres of excellence—covering ageing and care, modelling and imaging, quantum technology, genetics and tumour genetics.

The academy announced funding for its new centres of excellence for 2018-25 on 1 June. A total of 12 universities and research centres are part of the initiatives, it said. The centres will explore themes including the sustainable use of space, game culture, and European law and identity.

A total of 179 letters of intent were received as a result of the call, out of which 34 applicants were invited to a second-stage assessment. The overall success rate of the programme was 6.7 per cent. Applications were reviewed by international expert panels, the academy said.
