Government to top up polytechnic funds

The Finnish government has announced that it would set aside €24 million in 2018 to top up the fundraising efforts of universities of applied sciences.

“The government will put its own money into funds raised by universities of applied sciences,” Sanni Grahn-Laasonen, Finland’s research minister, said in a statement on 20 June. The announcement comes after Finland’s ministry of the interior prepared a law change that has allowed higher education institutions to collect funds for charitable purposes.

The amount to be topped up will depend on how much institutions collect, and funding decisions will be taken by the end of 2018, the government said. However, there will be a cap of €4m per institution, it added.
