Engineering network to help plug skills gap

A university network called FITech Turku will be established to attract more engineers to southwestern Finland, the government has confirmed.

The network will consist of seven institutions—Aalto University, the Lappeenranta University of Technology, the University of Oulu, the Tampere University of Technology, the University of Turku, the University of Vaasa and Åbo Akademi University. A working group for the network submitted its plans to the government on 21 August.

The aim of the network is to support industry growth in southwestern Finland, and to offer engineering students a wider variety of possibilities to complete their theses and to do internships and projects for companies based in the region. The network will provide doctoral students the possibility to do research on growth of business in southwestern Finland, the government said.
