Finnish PhD students deflated by career snags

Three-quarters of early-career researchers in Finland who responded to a survey are worried about the job uncertainty they face in academia.

Insufficient funding and stretches of unemployment are putting pressure on PhD candidates and postdocs, the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers reported on 15 November.

A third of 1,870 early-career researchers who responded to a survey carried out by the union said they had been unemployed at some point during their dissertation. Some 72 per cent said they had two or more sources of funding during their dissertation.
