A research reactor in Espoo, a city on the outskirts of Helsinki, is to be decommissioned after the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland signed a deal with the energy company Fortum.
The reactor, called FiR1, was in operation from 1962 to 2015. It will be decommissioned in 2021 at the earliest, while its attached laboratories will be decommissioned in 2019, the VTT said on 30 November.
FiR1 was used for a variety of projects, including research into moonlight and cancer treatments. “Above all, it has been a central institution for education and research in nuclear energy,” the VTT said.
