Finland’s union for researchers has elected Maija Peltola, a phonetics researcher at the University of Turku, as its chairwoman.
Peltola’s election was announced by the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers on 1 December. Her term will start on 1 January 2019 and end in 2020.
The union has also adopted its higher education and science policy programme for 2019-23. In a statement, Peltola that said that an ongoing revision of Finland’s university funding system should focus more on stability. She also said that the government needs to take a long-term, strategic view of research and its impact on society.
