Finnish academics have spoken out against a government proposal to increase the share of strategic funding for universities, saying it could interfere with autonomy.
The Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers said on 25 September that it opposes plans to increase the share of government funding for universities that is strategy-based from 12 to 15 per cent. The plan, which is to be finalised in October, would apply to next year’s higher education budget.
The union said the proposal went against the results of an evaluation completed on 21 September, which found that Finnish universities need more financial autonomy. The planned increase in the share of strategic funding would tighten government control over what kind of courses and research universities can spend money on, the union said.
