Norway faces PhD drought

Norway risks having 700 PhDs less than it needs in five years' time, with a particular deficit in science and engineering subjects, a report published on 14 February claims.

The report, compiled by an expert group at the behest of the education ministry and the Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions (UHR), compares the needs of society with the supply of people with doctoral-level education.

“We need to target efforts to increase the number of doctoral degrees in engineering and science,” said Tora Aasland, Norway’s research minister.
