Belgian mathematician wins Abel Prize

A Belgian-born mathematician working in the United States has won the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters’ annual Abel Prize.

The prize, worth 6 million Norwegian kronor (€800,000), went to Pierre Deligne at Princeton University, New Jersey, for his work on algebraic geometry. Kirsti Strøm Bull, the president of the academy, said his work had great impact on number theory and representation theory.
