Norway must step up Arctic research, says academy

There is an urgent need for better knowledge of the Arctic Ocean and its response to climate change, Norwegian experts say.

During a Norwegian Academy of Science meeting, held this week in Oslo, researchers urged the Norwegian government to spend more money on Arctic research.

The first step should be to allocate resources on basic scientific research and build a modern research infrastructure in the Arctic, the researchers said. According to the academy such infrastructure will be crucial in supporting the country’s polar strategy.
