Ombudsman assumes office

Emily O'Reilly has taken up the position as European ombudsman, meaning she will assume responsible for investigating allegations of misconduct from EU bodies and institutions.

O’Reilly, who has worked as the ombudsman for Ireland since 2003, was elected from a pool of six candidates in July. She is the first woman to be appointed to the European position.

Her term begins on 1 October and she will remain in the role until at least 2014.
