Parliament maintains opposition to spending cuts

The European Parliament has voted in favour of a motion to uphold its own budget proposal in the face of cuts demanded by the Council of Ministers to the 2014 EU budget.

In a plenary session on 23 October, 480 MEPs voted in favour of the Parliament’s own budget proposal, which was previously adopted by the budgets committee at the start of this month.

MEPs said that there should not be budget cuts in areas they deemed “vital” to boosting the economy, including research and entrepreneurship.
