Schulz tipped to be Commission president candidate

The Party of European Socialists has launched its nomination process to find its candidate for the president of the European Commission ahead of European elections in May 2014, with some suggesting that Martin Schulz may be a contender.

Although a PES statement says that the process is “democratically open and politically credible”, as national parties can push forward their own candidates, German social democrat and Parliament president Schulz has emerged as a strong favourite.

EurActiv reports that the PES president Sergei Stanishev described Schulz as “our strongest candidate now” and as “a person standing firm for our values, which express the real needs of the people”.
